The Engine Room
Welcome to the tactical blueprint of my training. Managing high-volume endurance goals alongside injury prevention means my training cannot just be about running blindly into the ground. It requires a highly deliberate, structured dance between impact mileage, zero-impact metabolic conditioning, heavy resistance work, and deep mobility.
Below is the foundational framework I use to organize my weekly disciplines, ensuring the cardiovascular engine stays sharp while respecting the physical recovery process.
My Weekly Training Framework
Monday | Active Recovery
-
Activity: 45 minutes of low-intensity cycling.
-
Purpose: Flushing out the legs from the weekend effort and prioritizing a total physical reset.
Tuesday | Alternating Quality Intervals
-
Activity: Gym Session (Strength training) + high-intensity conditioning on the indoor rower.
-
Purpose:
-
Week 1 (VO2 Max): Building physical power and challenging top-end aerobic capacity while pre-fatigued.
-
Week 2 (Lactate Threshold): Developing sustainable speed and extending the body's ability to hold a hard pace over time.
-
Wednesday | Easy Aerobic Flush & Recovery
-
Activity: 45-minute easy run + Yin Yoga session (Note: Run can be swapped for a 45–60 min easy bike ride based on fatigue).
-
Purpose: Light aerobic movement paired with deep, passive stretching to restore tissue length and calm the nervous system.
Thursday | Strength & Aerobic Volume
-
Activity: Gym Session (Strength & core stability) + easy row or bike ride.
-
Purpose: Reinforcing structural durability while accumulating low-stress aerobic volume.
Friday | Full Rest Day
-
Activity: Complete structural and mental time-off.
-
Purpose: Allowing the body to fully adapt, repair, and absorb the training stress from the week.
Saturday | Steady Speed Work & Alignment
-
Activity: 5K Parkrun (or 5K row alternative) + 1:1 Pilates focused on running lesson.
-
Purpose: Alternating fast 5K efforts to practice steady speed work (ideally targeting marathon goal pace closer to race day), followed by targeted Pilates to sharpen deep abdominal strength, balance, and pelvic alignment.
Sunday | The Long Run
-
Activity: Specific distance on feet, incorporating targeted marathon pace blocks inside the run.
-
Purpose: The non-negotiable anchor of the week. Sustained time on feet to build specific cardiovascular volume, structural durability, and the psychological endurance required for race day.
The Training Logs: Real-World Execution
A framework is only as good as its execution. Below is the real-time data, split breakdowns, and physical realities of how I put this engine to the test week by week.
