This page is where I log the raw logistics of my training. I am a marathon runner at heart, but I do not just run. I blend heavy pavement miles with rowing and cycling to build a resilient, well-rounded engine without burning out.

Form Over Formulas

I am not here to prescribe a universal training plan or tell you how many intervals to hit. I simply log my personal splits, my recovery heart rates, and my honest physical breakthroughs. It is about sharing what happens when you step off the traditional running track and build an endurance machine using alternative methods.

Engine Log 01: The Half Marathon Row

  • Date: 28 June 2026

  • Session: 21,097m Endurance Piece

  • Focus: Aerobic Capacity & Mental Pacing

The Reality: After a podiatrist ordered me off the pavement to recover from a foot injury, I had to completely pivot my mindset and find a new endurance target. I sat down on the ergometer to pull a full half-marathon distance. It proved to be a completely different mental and physical battle than running on the road—a grueling test of posture and patience that pushed my cardiorespiratory limits to the absolute edge with zero joint impact.

Engine Log 02: Swapping the Track for the Erg

  • Date: 26 May 2026

  • Session: High-Intensity Intervals

  • Focus: VO2​ max & Lactate Threshold

  • The Strategy: To maximize the training effect, I execute this session immediately following my strength training block. Pulling these intervals with pre-fatigued muscles forces my heart and lungs to work even harder to hit top-end speeds, beautifully simulating the heavy-legged reality of the final miles of a marathon without the joint impact.

The Reality: High-intensity track sessions carry a massive risk of structural injury. To protect my joints and intentionally take the heavy loading off my feet during this marathon block, I move my red-line interval work entirely onto the indoor rower. This is a look at how I push my cardiovascular ceiling and train my body to clear lactic acid efficiently with zero pavement impact.

Engine Log 03: The Erg Parkrun - Pushing for a Fast 5K

  • Date: 6 June 2026

  • Session: 5,000m Time Trial

  • Focus: VO2​ max & Mental Pacing

The Reality: Before my podiatrist ordered me off the pavement, a Saturday morning Parkrun—pushing for an absolute PR—was a staple of my week. After a couple of weeks away from the road, I realized I could completely replicate that exact red-line intensity on the indoor rower. It is a pure, unadulterated test of pacing discipline and mental grit. You miss out on the social connection of a post-run coffee, but the cardiovascular engine gets exactly what it needs.

Engine Log 04: The Pacing Crucible (3 x 2000m)

  • Date: 30 June 2026

  • Session: Aerobic Threshold Intervals

  • Focus: Pacing Discipline & Volume

The Strategy: To maximize the training effect and simulate true marathon fatigue, I executed this 3×2000m session immediately following my strength training block. Pulling these sustained intervals with pre-fatigued muscles forces the heart and lungs to work significantly harder to maintain pace. The core strategy was pacing discipline: avoiding the temptation to fly out of the gate, focusing on precision stroke rates, and letting the cardiovascular demand build naturally across the 6,000 meters of total work.

The Reality: Marathon success isn't just about speed; it's about managing a constant, high-output effort over hours. Moving this aerobic threshold work to the indoor rower allows me to accumulate massive volume and deep cardiovascular strain without adding any pounding to my legs. It trains the brain to stay calm and disciplined when the working zone starts to bite.

Engine Log 05: Building the Engine (25km Endurance Row)

  • Date: 26 July 2026

  • Session: 25,000m Steady Endurance Row

  • Focus: Aerobic Endurance & Injury Recovery

The Reality: Running recovery has taken longer than I originally anticipated, and I'm still working closely with my podiatrist as we continue making gradual adjustments. Rather than rushing back into long runs, I've been steadily increasing the distance of my rowing sessions over recent weeks, with today's objective being a continuous 25km endurance row. Although rowing isn't a replacement for running, it allows me to keep my aerobic system working while significantly reducing the impact on my recovering foot. This is simply my own training journey and the approach that's currently working for me—I'm sharing my personal experiences rather than offering coaching or professional advice.
